Melbourne International Jazz Festival: 2012

Need something to warm those looming winter blues? We have a cure. A sophisticated one. The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is just a few short weeks away and as openly confessed believers in the religion of Jazz Music – We can honestly say that we’re beyond excited. The festival is in its 15th year this June and Melbourne is lucky enough to be playing host to some of the biggest and most creative names in jazz.  With plenty of international guest and curious home-grown talent, it’s time to pour yourself a glass of red and get amongst the buzz.

Given that classic jazz isn’t everybody’s cup of tea  but most of us like a bit of  hip-hop – then  American Dj/ producer/ beat boxer/ Vocalist  ‘Mc Taylor McFerrin’  along with NY’s  Jose’ James and Robert Glasper are just for you. Hitting our shores with plenty of swagger for a collaborative night labelled “Future Now”, the night is set to be a hiphop and soul infused performance exploring and challenging the modern-ness of jazz, today.  A definite gig to pencil in to your hipster diary.

Classic sounds from the old school legends have been on constant whole life. So there are no guesses to my level of excitement for seeing acts like McCoy Tyner and in the more recent era, Terence Blanchard. Incredible jazz pianist (Tyner) has been admired internationally for over 50 years, playing with some of the past greats in Jazz, most famously John Coltrane.  He and his Trio are Melbourne bound for the festival and will be bringing a touch of the past with them. A perfect night for a glass of wine over the cosy sounds of talent that has been playing for decades.

There is an array of acts spanning over the 10 day festival, including plenty of free shows around town. For full details on the festival guide, head to
