I don’t think I’ll ever forget the first time I witnessed the music of The Paper Kites. Years ago in a tiny band room hidden somewhere in Northcote, I watched five unassuming musicians take to the stage as the support act in front of no more than 100 people. About 30 seconds into the set and in one magical moment, I was enamoured by their music and that hasn’t changed since. In the meantime the band have moved swiftly from strength to strength, showing no signs of slowing soon. This past 12 months have been particularly exciting and saw the band gain support spots with the likes of Josh Pyke and Boy and Bear as well as grow their various music videos to over 3,000,000 views. Plus that, who could forget the heart wrenching Grey’s Anatomy season finale just gone wherein the band’s song, Featherstone, featured in the final minutes, to just name a few highlights.
Fast forward through all the excitement and I found myself sitting at a table in a dark courtyard surrounded by said musicians. The quintet have been making music together for years now and sure know how to do it right.
In preparation for their upcoming Young North tour, (to support TOMORROW’S release of their EP of the same name,) the band reminisced on the wonderful times they’ve had thus far as well as shared tales of what we can expect next. Read the story above.
