In special cases here at Small Werld, we have the opportunity to speak with artists who genuinely make us buzz with excitement. For years now, I’ve avidly watched the happening’s of LA based boys, Local Natives and when told I was able to have a chat with them, it was absolutely one of the aforementioned instances. My fan girl-ing aside, these folk have ridiculous talent and are responsible for a sound that, in my humble opinion, is down-right spectacular. Their sounds evoke emotion and if you haven’t already, take a moment to experience the tight harmonies, rhythmic beats and enchanting harmonies they champion.

No matter how attached to home we might be the truth is, at times that inner wanderlust we all have grows the point that suddenly we find ourselves on webjet.com.au at 3am trawling through flights to exotic locations around the globe.

This marks part one of a series of city guides from around the globe that we love and call home. Los Angeles has a reputation for being the destination of wanna be actors, pop stars covered in glitter and distant Kardashian relatives. We’ve put together our guide to avoiding the bottom feeding f-grade celebs (unless that’s what you’re after) and how to make the most of a visit to LA-LA-LAND.

There’s plenty of great things we haven’t touched on, but here’s our top 8. Read on above.

A little while ago on a cold winter’s night, a few of the folks behind Small Werld sat on a dimly lit patch of grass with a boy who was lucky enough to spend his days doing what he loved and who just so happened to be g’damn amazing at it. Later on that same evening, we watched him play his songs to a backyard filled with no more than 150 fans, each of whom were enamoured by the captivating sounds they were hearing (watch that interview here). Two years later we stood in the same city as part of a sold-out crowd at the Palace theatre, ready to see the aforementioned talent take to the stage as part of Matt Corby’s recent Australian tour. The onlooking cast of thousands lost their words, their breath and in many cases, their hearts to the show that was before them — watching with an intensity that made it seem as if their ability to comprehend the importance of anything else in that moment, was gone.

These past two years have seen Matt and his band reach heights that I’m sure still don’t seem like reality. With a much anticipated album en route, we’re confident this is level of success is merely a drop in an ocean much deeper than one could imagine. Despite possessing a fame that many will only dream of achieving, Matt speaks from his heart and remains one the most genuine artists we’ve had the pleasure of conversing with. We spoke of the bizarrely brilliant adventures he’s thus far encountered and the wonderfully wild moments that have ensued.

Envious of the designs she saw overseas, and underwhelmed by the response of local salons to her requests for intricate patterns, Chelsea Bagan figured she’d just teach herself.

What started as a hobby has turned into a sensation. With a cult following on Instagram and no shortage of girls donning her stylish designs on the streets of Melbourne, it’s hard to deny that the nail art trend has arrived. We caught up with the Trophy Wife herself to watch her work her magic and find out what’s in store for the future.

Jagwar Ma results from the collective musical efforts of Sydney-siders Jono Ma and Gab Winterfield. I dare say that at this point in time they are one of the most criminally unknown Australian artists I’m aware of but with their debut album, Howlin’, dropping in the coming week, I’d suggest that’ll be changing soon. Their electric style of rock n’ roll is one that’s captivating — the type of sound that creeps into your consciousness and wraps itself around you in a warm, fuzzy, psychedelic embrace. Naturally, we’re more than okay with it and highly recommend you jump on board to join in the party.

In the past the guys have toured with Foals, The XX and — I’ll stop the namedropping there, you get the idea… As well as their aforementioned album drop, the lads will be performing at many more exciting locations around the globe over the coming months, i.e. Glastonbury Festival, Splendour In The Grass and headline shows in the USA, the UK and Europe. In the lead up to their prolonged absence from our side of the world, we caught up with Gab to chat about the exciting adventures that are underway for the band. Read on.

If you’re yet to hear the music of Walk The Moon, I can say with confidence that I expect that to change in the very near future. The boys that make up the band, Nicholas, Kevin, Sean and Eli have had a noteworthy past 12 months that has seen them play shows with the likes of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Fun and The Rubens. To keep the namedropping to a minimum I’ll stop there, but you get the idea — these good folk are heading places.

Having developed quite the name for themselves across the globe, it only makes sense for their success to finally spill onto our shores. Making their Australian debut last month, the Ohio-bred boys took to the stage in support of The Rubens on their national tour. Playing a handful of sideshows along the way, conveniently timed the stop over to coincide with the Australian release of their self-titled LP, taking their infectious and electric performance on the road. On a chilly Autumn afternoon not too long ago, we sat down with the boys to discuss the thrilling times that have past and the even more exciting adventures on the horizon. Many-a-laugh were had as reflections were made on the show’s they’ve played, the cities they’ve visited and that one time a stranger peed in their lift.

We have all had that point on a trip when we realise that we can’t fit all of the cool stuff we’ve found into our luggage. During her 2 years traversing the globe, Nikki Hall encountered just that situation and decided to do something about it. She collected phone numbers and email addresses of every interesting artist and designer she crossed paths with, and slowly started to build a vision of a space to showcase them when she returned home. With that vision the second coming of Hudson, originally located on Carlisle St, St Kilda, was born.
